Understanding card types and formats

Soldo offers flexible card options so you can support different spending needs across your organisation. This guide explains the two card types you can create and the card formats available for each one. You will also find examples to help you choose the right combination for your team.

Card types

Every regular spend card created in Soldo is either a User card or a Company card. All of our cards use the Mastercard network and can be used wherever Mastercard is accepted.

User cards

User cards are assigned to one person. They are ideal when you want clear accountability for each purchase. A User card helps someone pay for work-related items without using personal money.

  • Best for: travel, meals, supplies, online purchases, recurring subscriptions.
  • Why choose this: each transaction is linked to a specific person, making spending clear and easy to review.

Company cards

Company cards can be used by multiple people. They are useful when a team, project, or location shares responsibility for certain types of spend.

  • Best for: shared office costs, events, team activities, communal equipment.
  • Why choose this: teams can cover shared expenses without needing multiple individual cards.

Card formats

Once you choose a card type, you'll be able to select your preferred card format. Each format supports different situations and spending habits. You can create any format as either a User card or a Company card.

Virtual cards

Virtual cards exist digitally within Soldo and are ready to use immediately. You can also add them to Apple Pay or Google Pay in the Soldo mobile app.

  • Best for: online purchases, software subscriptions, ad-hoc purchases that need fast access to a card.
  • Why choose this: no waiting for delivery, and ideal for distributed or remote teams.

Plastic cards

Plastic cards are physical cards delivered to your chosen shipping address. They work in-store and online, and they support cash withdrawals from cashpoints.

  • Best for: travel, hospitality, regular in-person payments, and cash access.
  • Why choose this: a reliable all-purpose card for everyday spending.

Fuel cards

Fuel cards are a specific format designed for vehicle-related spending. They're specifically designed to support teams who manage company vehicles.

  • Supports: fuel, tolls, parking, service stations, and EV charging (spending is restricted to vehicle related spending via Merchant categories and are automatically set up if you choose this card format).
  • Assign to a vehicle: keep fuel spending organised by linking a card to a specific vehicle.

Other card options

Temporary cards

User card and Company cards are great for supporting teams who spend regularly with company funds. However, with Soldo, you can also support spending for occasional ad-hoc spending. For example, you may have users who only need to spend a few times a year or for specific projects. You can enable these users to spend using our temporary virtual cards for pre-approved spend. Find out more here.

Subscriptions and online ad cards

You can also use Soldo cards for recurring costs such as software licences, online advertising, and other operational expenses. Creating dedicated cards for these payments makes it easier to track costs and avoid service interruptions. Find out more here.

When cards might not be enough

Cards are the simplest way to let people spend company money safely. In some cases a supplier may require a bank transfer instead of a card payment. You can handle this through the Bank transfers feature.

If you want selected users to make bank transfers on your behalf, you can add the Bank transfer access add-on. This empowers spenders with an additional payment methods  while keeping your controls in place. To learn more about Bank transfer access, read this article.
