Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) for contactless transactions

Another area of payments that is covered by the Payment Services Directive (PSD2) is how contactless card transactions are managed in relation to Strong Customer Authentication.

What is changing?

From now on, we'll be asking for your PIN, in line with the new banking regulations. Authorisation using Chip & PIN will be required when making contactless transactions:

  • After a number of consecutive transactions; or
  • Total transaction value exceeds a specified amount; or
  • Any single transaction exceeds a specified amount

Some merchants may ask you to use a different payment method when your contactless declines, but all you need to do is use Chip & PIN to complete your purchase.

Note: Most banks and payment service providers default to the regulatory limits, but they can set their own contactless limits within these if they so choose. Soldo does not set or control the contactless limits. If you're in the UK, you'll find up to date information on regulatory limits here.

Important things to note

  • TFL and other city transport is excluded
  • Unattended terminals at parking spaces are excluded
